Mavis Marie Sheehan, nee McKillop, of Mount Prospect, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, just shy of her 89th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family.
A proud first-generation American, Mavis lived a life defined by hard work, adventure, and deep compassion for others. She was exceptionally family oriented and took immense pride in her sons and grandchildren, cherishing every opportunity to bring everyone together. Whether during holidays, family dinners, or the beloved annual trips to Washington Island, Wisconsin, a place filled with years of treasured family history and memories, she found her greatest joy simply being surrounded by those she loved most.
Mavis will always be remembered for her infectious laugh, a sound that instantly filled a room and brought comfort and happiness to everyone around her. Her warmth, humor, and generous spirit made lasting impressions on all who knew her.
She embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. She worked as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines, a career that reflected her adventurous nature and love of meeting people and remained active in the Silverliners after retirement. Later in life, she devoted her time to serving others through volunteer work at the Shedd Aquarium and as a beloved employee of the Arlington Heights school district.
An avid gardener, Mavis found peace and happiness tending to her flowers and plants, creating beauty wherever she lived. She was also a master diver whose passion for scuba diving led her to spend many months of retirement in Cozumel with Tom, where they found joy, serenity, and adventure beneath the sea.
Above all else, Mavis will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend whose kindness, laughter, and adventurous spirit enriched the lives of so many. Her memory will live on in the stories shared around family tables, the traditions she helped create, and the countless lives she touched.
Mavis was the beloved wife of Thomas Sheehan for 65 years, loving mother of Michael (late Barb) Sheehan, Jim (Karyn) Sheehan and Dan (Melissa) Sheehan, cherished grandmother of Michelle (Andrew), Mary, Tom, McKenna, Dylan (Allison), Justin (Gryphon), dear sister of the late Marcella (late Ernie) Santell and the late Marian McKillop, fond aunt of Pat (Brian) Waugh.
