Thomas G. “Tom” Sheehan of Mount Prospect, Illinois, peacefully passed away on October 27, 2026 at the age of 94.
Born in Buffalo, NY, to Dr. George L. and Mary (Robinson) Sheehan, Tom was raised with the values of faith, family, service and hard work that would guide him throughout his life. He attended St. Bonaventure University, where he was a proud member of the university’s swim team. Tom graduated in just three years with a degree in finance and business, a reflection of both his intelligence and determination.
Tom answered the call to serve his country during the Korean War, where he proudly served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his honorable military service, he embarked on a successful career in sales. His profession was a natural fit, as Tom genuinely loved meeting people, striking up conversations and sharing stories. His warmth, outgoing personality and gift for connecting with others earned him countless friendships throughout his life.
On August 25, 1961, Tom married the love of his life, Mavis M. (McKillop) Sheehan. Together they built a loving family and shared nearly 65 years of marriage before Mavis’ passing in May 2026. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their devotion to one another and to the family they created together.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is lovingly remembered by his three sons, Mike Sheehan of Algonquin, Illinois, Jim (Karyn) Sheehan of Mukwonago, Wisconsin and Dan (Melissa) Sheehan of West Dundee, Illinois. He was a proud grandfather to Dylan (Allison), Michelle (Andrew), Justin (Gryphon), Mary, Tom and McKenna. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Paul) Pepe, along with many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mavis and his daughter-in-law, Barb Sheehan.
More than anything, Tom loved people. Whether visiting with family, chatting with neighbors or meeting someone for the first time, he never missed an opportunity to tell a story, share a laugh or make a new friend. His conversations were filled with humor, memories and genuine interest in others, and those who knew him will forever remember his engaging personality and generous spirit.
Tom was also a devoted Catholic whose faith remained an important part of his life. His belief in God, commitment to family and appreciation for the simple joy of spending time with others defined the man he was.
Tom’s family finds comfort knowing he has been reunited with his beloved Mavis. His legacy of service, faith, kindness and love for people will live on through his family and in the many lives he touched.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, family members, friends and healthcare professionals who provided Tom with compassionate car, friendship and support throughout his later years.
